چکیده

Continuum observations at radio, millimetre, infrared and soft X-ray energies are presented for a sample of 22 quasars, consisting of flat and steep spectrum radio loud, radio intermediate and radio quiet objects. The primary observational distinctions, among the different kinds of quasars in the radio and IR energy domains are studied using large observational datasets provided by ISOPHOT on board the Infrared Space Observatory, by the IRAM interferometer, by the sub-millimetre array SCUBA on JCMT, and by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) facilities IRAC1 on the 2.2 m telescope and SEST. The spectral energy distributions of all quasars from radio to IR energies are analyzed and modeled with non-thermal and thermal spectral components. The dominant mechanism emitting in the far/mid-IR is thermal dust emission in all quasars, with the exception of flat spectrum radio loud quasars for which the presence of thermal IR emission remains rather uncertain, since it is difficult to separate it from the bright non-thermal component. The dust is predominantly heated by the optical/ultraviolet radiation emitted from the external components of the AGN. A starburst contributes to the IR emission at different levels, but always less than the AGN (≤ 27%). The distribution of temperatures, sizes, masses, and luminosities of the emitting dust are independent of the quasar type.

Occurrence and Global Properties of Narrow C Iv Λ1549å Absorption Lines in Moderate-redshift Quasars

A statistical study is presented of (a) the frequency of narrow C iv λ1549 absorption lines in 1.5 < ∼ z < ∼ 3.6 radio-quiet and radio-loud quasars, and of (b) the UV and radio properties of the absorbed quasars. The quasar sample is unbiased with respect to absorption properties and the radio-quiet and radio-loud subsamples are well matched in redshift and luminosity. A similarly high incidenc...

The Nuclear Reddening Curve for Active Galactic Nuclei and the Shape of the Infrared to X-ray Spectral Energy Distribution

We present extinction curves derived from the broad emission lines and continua of samples of 72 radio-loud and 1018 radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The curves are significantly flatter in the UV than curves for the local interstellar medium. The reddening curves for the radio-quiet Large Bright Quasar Survey quasars are slightly steeper than those of the radio-loud quasars in the UV...

Beamed radio and far infrared emission in quasars and radio galaxies

Simple orientation model predictions for the radio to far infrared spectral energy distributions of radio-loud AGN are confronted with observations at various radio frequencies. This model is subsequently used to investigate 60 μm farinfrared data. The results are supportive of the unified scheme for Fanaroff-Riley class II radio galaxies and quasars. The relative strength of the beamed compone...

Radio Variability of Radio Quiet and Radio Loud Quasars

The majority of quasars are weak in their radio emission, with flux densities comparable to those in the optical, and energies far lower. A small fraction, about 10%, are hundreds to thousands of times stronger in the radio. Conventional wisdom holds that there are two classes of quasars, the radio quiets and radio louds, with a deficit of sources having intermediate power. Are there really two
